Gift Yourself

Pangyo middle counselor Elethia Rhoden encourages us to be kind to ourselves during this holiday break.

Now that we are in the season of sharing and gifting, let’s not forget the precious gift that we should give to ourselves: the gift of betterment. What are you doing to better yourself and those around you?

Are you taking time to better understand what makes you stand apart from your peers, and to cherish that difference. If not, now is a great time to start. What do you like to do (academics, athletics, gaming, drawing, the arts, etc.)? What do you do to expand that interest (read, practice, read, research, etc.)? With the holidays quickly approaching, take some time to gift yourself. Whether you are in the mountains, on the beach, hiking, or sofa surfing, find a portion of your break to gift yourself.  

Enjoy The Present 

Unplug from social media and technology and simply enjoy what you are doing at the present time and the company around you.


Research shows that the more we laugh (and cry), the less stressed we are. Laugh in any way that is comfortable to you. Make jokes with your friends. Or, go old school and take out some games, even board games. You will soon forget about your phone and computer once you are entangled in a great game of Monopoly or Twister.


This doesn’t mean you have to start training as though you are going out to complete the marathon, but exercise on whichever level is comfortable for you that will get your heart rate up and flowing. Walk, jog, play basketball, a round of golf (walking to the holes), core work, cross training, etc.


Take time to recuperate. Take a nap during the day or make sure you get your eight hours of sleep in the evening. You will notice that with the proper amount of rest, you will wake up refreshed and ready to conquer any obstacle that comes your way.  

Before you know it, the holiday will be over and it’ll be time for you to track towards the completion of the 2017-2018 school year.
