Two KIS middle school students, Shelby and Sydney, recently talked with KIS staff person Soelhee Kim who had the honor of participating in the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics torch relay.
The Olympic Torchbearer plays an important role to keep the history of the Olympics alive. A torchbearer is a person who is selected to carry a ceremonial torch. According to Wikipedia, the running of the Olympic torch symbolizes the theft of fire from the Greek god Zeus by Prometheus.
Seolhee Kim is a staff member at KIS who has been working here since February of 2017. She was selected to be an Olympic Torchbearer through a long process, and this is her story.
Seolhee Kim entered with her friends in a Coca Cola sponsored event in which you could fill out an application to become an Olympic Torchbearer. After filling out the application and waiting about two months, she heard back: she had passed the first round and now she would need to write a dream story.
Seolhee wrote a story about her dream to be a dancer as a little kid, her dream to be a flight attendant, and her journey through her life up to then.
After submitting her writing piece she waited about five months. But when she finally heard back she was happy to hear that she had been selected to be a Olympic Torchbearer! She ran 200 meters with the Olympic flame on November 22, 2017.
When we asked her about what it felt like to be an Olympic Torchbearer she answered with “It was amazing, I was so proud of myself!” She felt like a famous actor passing the streets full of people. Everyone was waving their hands to her and shouting, “Fighting!”
“My parents, older sister and I went to Hwasun-gun and took lots of photos and videos. When I saw my dad’s face he was smiling from ear to ear with joy. This was a very precious memory that my family will always cherish!” Seolhee Kim answered with a smile.
“It is awesome that you got selected! I am so proud of you! An opportunity like this comes once in a lifetime!” is what her friend exclaimed when she was chosen to be an Olympic Torchbearer.
When we asked Seolhee what her favorite Olympic winter event is, she said figure skating, and her favorite Korean athlete is Yuna Kim, a figure skater. She says the reason why Yuna Kim is her favorite athlete because of her patience. And that she’s looked up to her through hard times, and that she is a big role model to stay happy.
When we asked her for advice she answered with, “If your goals seem unattainable or hard, don’t give up. Just believe in yourself and think about the benefits for the future.” Seolhee said this with kindness and these words came from the heart to inspire. She wants everyone to create their own dream or goal and follow it ‘till they reach it, then make more goals each increasing in difficulty. Push yourself and do your best to attain, accomplish and reach your goals!
Seolhee believes as a Korean that the PyeongChang 2018 Olympics is a dream come true and that being able to run with the Olympic torch gave her confidence and is a memory she will have for her lifetime. Torch bearing was a once in a lifetime opportunity and she is glad that she was able to be a part of the Olympic history.
Watch Soelhee’s run with the Olympic torch!
Thank you Soelhee Kim for sharing your story and photos! Thank you Shelby and Sydney for interviewing and writing such a neat piece about a person in our KIS community!
